Clusters in the Midlands

Invest in Midlands Clusters

Cluster Snapshots

In May 2023 we published the report Exploring the Investment Potential of Midlands Clusters. As productive concentrations of related business activity, clusters are challenging to define but nonetheless present economic strengths across the Midlands.

Alongside the Midlands Observatory, we use data and insight to present some of the region’s most significant clusters, building on what our partners have prioritised through local industrial strategies and other economic plans.

Our findings

Through this work we have identified and analysed:

  • 6 Midlands ‘Super-Clusters’ – world-leading economic strengths and innovation assets distributed across the region
  • 10 Midlands ‘Established Clusters’ – significant concentrations of economic activity in multiple locations, linked to sectors of long-established industrial strength
  • 14 Midlands ‘New Economy Clusters’ – multiple concentrations of economic activity identified by partners as aligned to emerging knowledge, technology and innovation-intensive sectors.
